Learning A Third Language

In today's society, learning a third language isnt such a huge deal. In some schools, learning a third language is actually compulsory. But does learning a third language benefit us in any way? Well for me, i believe that learning a third language is beneficial to a person in many many ways.

I have been learning japanese for almost 1 and a half years and I think I have benefitted from it. I am able to use the language to talk to my japanese friends and also learning the language has allowed me to understand japanese shows.

Learning a third language will allow one to widen their social network. With the knowledge of another language, one will be able to talk to a wider range of people without having a communication barrier. Besides that acquiring a new language would reduce the possibilities of miscommunication between people who speak different languages.

Knowledge of a third language will also allow people to enjoy more media that are available in that foreign language.Through these shows we are able to enjoy a different kind of entertainment and at the same time learn about the different cultures that others might have.

Thus i believe that learning a new languagae is beneficial to a person indefinitely!

Learning a third language is of course useful!
To side-track a bit, you can make use of the third language to scold the other person which the latter does not understand.
On one hand, you do not annoy the person and you can remain in camaraderie with your friend.
On the other hand, you are able to vent your frustrations(:
Sorry if this is too blatant or immature, but I guess every person at the end of the day makes use of their 'third language flair' to do the above.

You can include how a third language will also expose you to more opportunities when you go out to work. For example, when a company is looking for someone to go for a business trip, they would most likely choose someone who is able to converse in the native language. Not only does it allow you to get around the country more easily, the clients will be more impressed. There won't be a need for a translator, which would usually cause the meeting to be quite awkward at times during the silent moments when you are waiting for the translator to let you know what was said.

hmmm. I'm not sure if having a third language is actually helpful these days seeing how so many people can speak third languages so in that case it doesn't neccessarily guarantess you an advantage in the working world.

Learning a langauge which is not widely used in the society you reside in is a good example of how cultures co-habit with each other. Nowadays, there are more people embracing the Japenese culture. Hence, by learning a third language (in your case, Japenese), you will be able to understand the Japan culture better.

However, no one is in a better position then yourself to decide the benefits of learning a third language.

Personally, I do agree with the many benefits which one may derive from learning a third language. In addition to the ones you've cited, it'll definitely help one to communicate more effectively when travelling in that native country. It helps one to gain a better understanding of that culture as well. I'm taking french as an elective myself and although I'm yet to be proficient at it, I've learnt much more than just the language. For instance, a large part of English vocabulary comes directly from French. e.g. RSVP stands for répondre s'il vous plait! (:

i think learning a third language is interesting as it can help you in many ways! especially with work and people. And when you go overseas, you can also tell if the people there are trying to cheat you or not.

Why stop at the third language? Why not fourth? Fifth? Unless you have mastered the 2 basic languages, namely your own native language and english(beacause it is universally recognized), dont bother picking up a thrid. Being a jack of all trades and master of none is nothing to be impressive about.

hello anonymous.

i guess you're right in saying that "being a jack of all trades and master of none is nothing to be impressive about."

my point is that a third language will only be useful to a person if the person is fluent in both their native language and in english.

people can obviously take up a fourth or fifth language after they have mastered the other 3 languages well.

learning a third language do help a lot in communicating with someone close to you.. for example, i picked up a bit of mandarin in my 20yrs of life watching chi dramas and hanging ard my chi frens.. it does help when my frens do not have to explain themselves when they are talking among themselves.. it also gives us a lot more choices in life.. be it work or frens.. so, i'm all for learning their language!
