Media and its beneficial effects on the less privileged

My last and final entry would be on the power of media and its beneficial effects on the less privileged people.

Just this month, there was the president star charity show. These fund raising shows aim at helping the disabled, lower income families and even orphans. Though there has been a lot of commotion about the NKF staff misusing the funds, it doesn't seem to have affected a huge percentage of singaporeans. People are still donating generously to help these people.

The media has been a great help to these people. Without the media, I believe that many people wouldn't even bother to help the less fortunate. Maybe it's even right to say that many wouldn't even be aware that people are in such situations. Thus I feel that using the media to spread the idea that the more privileged people should help out, whether it is by volunteering at homes or just donating a small sum of money. No matter how small the amount of money it would still be helpful to them.

Another show that caught my attention was this series on channel 8. 心晴大动员 Life Transformers which is hosted by Christopher Lee and Quan Yi Fong. For this week's episode, the 2 hosts and a group of volunteers helped to clean up and redecorate a house that housed 4 adults and 2 children. And out of these 4 adults, only 1 adult is working and he is supporting his 3 other siblings who are mentally disabled. The 2 children are his nieces. The volunteers then helped to clean the very very dirty house and the hosts helped the adults to get jobs to support themselves.

I don't know if you would understand my description but I personally felt very affected by this show. It was disturbing in a way as I can't believe that such situations existed in Singapore. And the very fact that only 1 adult is working to feed 5 mouths is pretty sad.

Which brings me back to the point of how media helps to increase our awareness of the less privileged. With shows like this, some might say that it's to gain the pity of the viewers, but for me it justs makes me feel like going the extra mile to help people like them by volunteering whenever I can.

Thus to conclude my final post, I would like to say that I'm grateful for the media for increasing the awareness of the less fortunate and I hope that more people would volunteer to help these people whenever they can! (:

i guess i have to agree with you. if you've not mentioned it, i probably wouldn't have noticed! sometimes i would think that the media is "just a show" not more of a real thing though. i guess we humans dont feel it until we've experienced the real thing like IN the shows. well at least we know that there ARE people out there whom are less privileged and i guess we can help them out in some way.

I agree that the media helps to increase awareness. Sometimes we all need a programme like that to show us how forturnate we are.

i agree, the media has an edge in creating awareness, in imparting knowledge and educating the public of it's ignorance of the people around them. Shows like the presidents star charity, being shown on televisions, reaches to every household tuned in. It creates a huge opportunity for the majority to be educated in matters of the country and creates a clear avenue for the public to give through telepols. Videos of the less privilege gives a sneak preview of their lives, and moves the human sprit to help one another, man to man, human to human.

the media has proven over the years to be a very useful tool in providing information and news to the masses. if used for the less privilege it will be beneficial.

It is true that media plays an important role to multiply information to almost everyone in the shortest times. Therefore with the help of media, it is able to awake people who are more fortunate that there are still less privileged people out there who need help. It also enables people to make contribution to the less privileged in a much simple manner. For Example, in the hectic life of Singapore, we can't expect people to go around to search for who are the less privileged people and who are the ones who really in need of help. With different charity shows broadcast, it allows people to obtain hotline and make contribution in the shortest time. Overall, I feel the media is very much beneficial to the less privileged.

I agree that without the media, i wouldnt have realise that there is less fortunate people around us. Media not only include TV programmes, but newspaper and advertisement as well. If I havent been reading the newspaper and watching TV, I doubt that I would actually be aware of the less fortunate people.

seeing how people donate so generously after watching President Star Challenge.. and after reading about the less fortunate in the newspaper. i agree to a large extent that the media have many beneficial effects.

Indeed the mass media is beneficial in several different ways. With the help of the media, the less fortunate are able to receive help from the public and maybe even improve their standard of living.

Mediums such as the tv and the newspapers have to spread information to the vast number of people in the public. Things like charity shows which require donations, and missing people print ads are helpful so that the public will be able to play a part and help out. Hence, the mass media is indeed an influential medium. =)
